Big Reds Blank Beckley 24-0 Thanks To 6 Takeaways

Game Pictures | Game Statistics

Big Red head coach Don Reeves got something he had been wanting for four and a half years - a shutout - as his team blanked the visiting Beckley Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles 24-0 in a steady rain Friday night at Stadium Field.

While the PHS defense was accomplishing a feat not achieved since the ninth game of the 2009 year (the year before Reeves became head coach) with its shutout, the Big Red offense was centered around quarterback Josh Trembly.

Trembly completed just four passes in the pouring rain but three of them went for touchdowns as he became the 16th player in PHS history to throw for 10 touchdown passes in a season (and he is barely past the halfway point of the season).

But it was the defense that stole the spotlight at Stadium Field, holding Beckley out of the end zone. The Flying Eagles entered the game averaging 29.2 points per game but were held to just 49 yards rushing and only 81 passing (completing nine of 22 passes).

The Big Red prevent unit came up with three fumble recoveries and scored a touchdown on one of them as Chase Shank raced 43 yards early in the fourth quarter after picking up a loose ball. The PHS secondary not only helped Beckley throw 13 incompletions but intercepted three of them with Dan Fox getting two and Terrance Tate one.

Max Chefren again led the way on defense for the Big Reds, getting eight tackles including his fifth sack of the year and 19th and 20th tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Only one time in the game did Beckley get inside the PHS red zone.

Offensively, Corey Burdette ran for 76 yards on 17 carries while Trembly added 41 on 13 attempts while throwing for 110 yards on four completions in 10 attempts. Brannon Turner, Austin Life and Burdette caught the scoring passes from Trembly.

The night started on a sour note for the Big Reds as Trembly was intercepted on the game's first play as he tried to go deep to Life. The Eagles then proceeded to run off 16 plays and drive 76 yards in 7:35 but on fourth down from the PHS eight yard line, Ethan Airhart broke up a pass at the goal line to thwart the drive.

After trading punts, PHS got its first break when Tyler Greathouse recovered a fumble on the Beckley 38 yard line with 10:03 left in the second quarter. Six running plays moved the ball to the 13 yard line from where Trembly found Turner in the the corner of the end zone for the touchdown with 7:17 left in the half. The extra point kick by Josh Roney was no good.

Four plays later PHS got the ball back on a punt near midfield and a holding penalty moved it back to the Big Red 44 yard line. Trembly then connected with Life on a pass near the sideline and Ben McFarland came off the line to make a clearing block as Life cut back across the field to go all the way for the touchdown with 4:05 left on the clock. The extra point pass failed and it wound up 12-0 at the half.

An interception by Fox gave PHS good field position with 7:48 left in the third quarter and a 36 yard pass to Stephen Dailey moved the ball to the Beckley 11. Four plays later Roney tried a 22 yard field goal that hit the upright.

A fumble recovery by Airhart gave PHS the ball back four plays later and the Big Reds ran the ball down to the five yard line where Trembly hit Burdette out of the backfield for the touchdown with 11:53 left in the game.

Less than 90 seconds later the Big Reds tacked on an insurance score as Shank scooped up a loose ball and sped 43 yards to the end zone to make it 24-0 with 10:26 on the scoreboard clock. Roney's kick was no good.

The second interception of the night by Fox saved the shutout with 3:51 left to play as Beckley quarterback Brent Osborne hurled for the goal line only to have Fox come up with the steal at the one yard line and return it 13 yards.
